Transgender woman assaulted in Tbilisi


Tbilisi, Georgia – Transgender woman was assaulted in Tbilisi, on Tsereteli avenue, approximately at 10 PM June 19.

According to her testimony she was physically and verbally abused by 4 men. They were laughing at her with transphobic remarks, whey were asking, if she was male or female, then they attacked her. 

Abused Transgender woman has wound on her body. She injured her hand. Fortunately, her wounds aren’t threatening for life. She informed Equality Movement about the assault. Our lawyer is defending her. 

In accompany with our lawyer transgender woman gave evidence to the police. Investigation has begun according to the Criminal Code, article 126 (1). Equality Movement urges to qualify this attack as hate motivated crime base on gender identity. 

The attackers aren’t detained yet. As police proclaimed they are searching for attackers. Equality Movement defends transgender woman and will monitor the case.
