Accused of blackmailing LGBT person arrested

Tbilisi, Georgia – With the help of Equality Movement member of LGBT community has eluded the blackmail on the basis of sexual orientation.

Victim being blackmailed by their acquaintance with forced coming out publicly. Since they doesn’t speak openly about their sexuality coercive coming out would ruin his life and security. The victim applied to Equality Movement.

On July 12, 2019 blackmailer demanded 1000 ₾ (350$) to be transferred on their account. The victim transferred a half of demanded money, 500 ₾ on July 12 and promised that they would transfer remaining money in the evening of July 13.

Equality Movement applied to the police and arrested the accused as a result of operative activities. Police investigating the case under paragraph 1 Article 181 of the Penal Code of Georgia. The violation of this article is punishable by fine or by imprisonment from two to four years.

He is sentenced to imprisonment as a preventive measure. Equality Movement will protect the victim’s interests until the end of the process.
