LGBTI community organisations submit joint report within the framework of the 45th working group session of the UN Universal Periodic Review

Equality Movement (EM), Tbilisi Pride and Women’s Initiatives Supporting Group (WISG) in collaboration with ILGA WORLD submitted the joint report regarding the state of human rights of LGBTI people in Georgia in the framework of the fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Georgia.

The shadow report evaluates the implementation of the SOGIESC-related recommendations issued to Georgia within the framework of the review carried out in 2021. Furthermore, the report examines the country’s legal framework and alarming challenges to the protection of LGBTI rights in 2021-2025.

The report specifically addresses the recently intensified political and institutional instrumentalization of the LGBTI community, along with the adoption of anti-LGBT law and the result of its chilling effect. It also thoroughly reviews the alarming aspects of LGBTI rights violations such as hate crimes, the prohibition of legal gender recognition, the criminalization of trans-specific healthcare services, restrictions on the freedom of peaceful assembly, and the state’s inaction in response to incidents of violence by far-right groups.

Recommendations concerning the aforementioned issues are provided at the end of the report.
