Activism for Equality, Lado Mkheidze

“I am Lado, I’m 21 years old. My hobbies are swimming and exercising as well as doing yoga. I study at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. I’m very satisfied. I love animals and generally every living creature there is. I’m also vegetarian and I always look at life from a positive angle.

I came out publicly on the 17th of May. I posted a photo on Facebook, where I was holding an umbrella and wearing a T-shirt with a flag and that didn’t cause any aggression, which was strange. Everyone took it well and I was surprised. I’m glad there are so many people around me who accept it but is doesn’t mean that people who don’t accept it don’t exist. I think 90% of our population doesn’t accept it.

In my childhood I used to think that I would leave and have a family somewhere else, abroad, where adopting a child, marriage and so on are legal. I would be happy there but lately I changed my mind and I have understood that running away from problems doesn’t mean overcoming them. You shouldn’t run away from your problems, instead you have to face them and you will definitely solve them.

There’s a big chance, that everything will be better in 10 years and I won’t have a hard time living here, so I will fight to create a better environment for myself and others. Out country doesn’t perceive us as humans, very often the state encourages aggression and violence in people and this must change. Only people will not achieve anything if the state doesn’t realize that we are all equal. At least they passed the law that says you shouldn’t discriminate against LGBT people so let’s follow that rule because the law is the law.

I’m lucky in general, because my mother stands beside me and it’s very important when you mother understands and supports. There are people whose mothers don’t support them and kick them out of the house. I don’t understand how can someone disown a child they have raised and looked at for their whole lives, their flesh and blood. How can they reject a child only because of such reason. It’s just unacceptable for me. I think it’s evil. I don’t understand how can a person have so much hate and aggression that they disown their flesh and blood. I will say this – love each other and understand each other. Let’s be happy together, instead of being in wars or other disasters because life is much easier when we understand and love each other.
